Successful Annual Conferences of ISMI and DGKZ in Hamburg

With a diverse and high-profile program, the organizers were able to once again attract numerous participants to the topics of ceramic implants and aesthetic concepts on May 3rd and 4th, 2024, in sunny Hamburg.

Under the theme “Ceramic Implants – State of the Art,” the annual conference of the International Society of Metal Free Implantology e.V. (ISMI) and the German Society for Cosmetic Dentistry e.V. (DGKZ) took place in the stylish setting of the EMPIRE RIVERSIDE Hotel, focusing on “Aesthetic Concepts.” Under the scientific direction of Dr. Karl Ulrich Volz/Kreuzlingen (CH) and Dr. Dominik Nischwitz/Tübingen for ISMI, and Prof. Dr. Martin Jörgens/Düsseldorf for DGKZ, both congresses offered participants an enormously diverse, varied, and high-caliber program. For the second time ever, the ISMI annual conference was held as a joint venture with DGKZ, providing ample opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange. With a joint podium on Friday moderated by all three scientific directors, participants had the opportunity at the start of the congress to listen to exciting lectures and actively participate in discussions. Throughout the afternoon, both associations illuminated their core topics in individual lecture blocks.

In the ISMI Pre-Congress Symposium, Dr. Karl Ulrich Volz presented on “Modern Ceramic Implants in Direct Comparison,” while in the parallel DGKZ podium, Dr. Niels Hoffmann/Leipzig introduced his concept of “Smile Makeover in the Digital Workflow.” Prof. Dr. Thorsten M. Auschill/Marburg spoke on “Dark Teeth, Fluorosis, White Spots, and Co. – How do we professionally treat them today?”

After the break, which was extensively used for visiting the accompanying industry exhibition and engaging in collegial conversations, the popular Table Clinics provided ample opportunity to discuss various specialized topics in implantology and aesthetic dentistry with recognized experts and gain insights beyond one’s own scope.

The first day of the congress concluded with a Get-together in the industry exhibition, where all participants could unwind the evening with wine, music, and engaging conversations among speakers, exhibitors, and attendees.

Saturday was dedicated entirely to science, once again in the exciting joint podium of both associations. One of the highlights of the morning was the lecture by Prof. Dr. Nicole B. Arweiler/Marburg on “Biologization in Periodontology – What can blood concentrates, hyaluronic acid, and others achieve in periodontics?” A topic that sparked discussions with many participants expressing questions and their own opinions in the subsequent discussion. The lectures by Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Shahram Ghanaati/Frankfurt am Main and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. Ralf Smeets/Hamburg on biologization in regenerative dentistry and the “Comparison of the use of PRF, PRP, PRP with hyaluronic acid, PRGF, or hyaluronic acid alone – When does it make sense?” also received much attention.

The congress day continued with further lectures in two podiums, featuring speakers like Prof. Dr. Christian Gernhardt/Halle (Saale), Prof. Dr. Thomas Weischer/Essen, Prof. Dr. Thorsten M. Auschill/Marburg, Dr. Natalie Pütz/Halle (Saale), and Dr. Antje Diederich/Halle (Saale) in the DGKZ podium, and Dr. Tobias Wilck/Hamburg, Dr. Robert Bauder, M.Sc., M.Sc./Kitzbühel (AT), Dr. Dr. Michael Rak/Bernried, and ZTM Norbert Wichnalek/Augsburg in the ISMI podium.

Next year, the annual conferences of ISMI and DGKZ will once again be held jointly. Participants will convene in the German capital Berlin on May 9th and 10th, 2025, at the Dorint Kurfürstendamm.
